There’s something deeply satisfying about growing a pumpkin so large you need help lifting it. Giant pumpkins aren’t just for show - they’re surprisingly easy to grow if you follow these key principles.
Choose the Right Variety
Not all pumpkins grow giant. Look for varieties specifically bred for size:
- Atlantic Giant - Can reach 200kg+ in ideal conditions
- Big Max - Reliable 50-80kg pumpkins
- Dill’s Atlantic Giant - World record holder lineage
The Three Keys to Giant Pumpkins
1. Space (Lots of It)
Each plant needs at least 6 square meters. These vines spread aggressively and a single plant can cover your entire veggie patch.
2. Rich Soil
Pumpkins are hungry feeders. Before planting, create a planting mound by digging a hole 60cm deep and 1m wide. Fill it with:
- 50% compost
- 25% well-rotted manure
- 25% original soil
3. Consistent Water
Pumpkins need even moisture throughout the growing season. Aim for 2-3 deep waterings per week, more during hot weather.
Growing Tips
Remove extra fruit: Once you have 2-3 pumpkins forming, remove all other flowers and baby pumpkins. This directs all energy into growing your champions.
Feed weekly: Side-dress with compost or liquid fertilizer every week once fruit sets.
Protect from sun: Use shade cloth over developing fruit to prevent sunscald on 40+ degree days.
Harvest Time
Wait until vines die back naturally and the stem is dry and woody. A mature pumpkin will have a hard shell that can’t be dented with your fingernail.
With patience and proper care, you’ll be growing pumpkins that impress the neighbors!
